Día de los Muertos Calavera de Azúcar Project, Day of the Dead Spanish classroom activities, comprehensible input reading activities
Looking for a Día de los Muertos project? This is perfect one for any level of Spanish - even novice! Students match the Day of the Dead symbols with clues inside the sugar skull, and then assemble the pieces. I embedded many cognates in the clues so even novices can figure them out! These projects look great displayed around the room or hallway!
NOTE: This project isn’t intended to have them acquire all the vocab that is used. The goal instead is to BUILD CONFIDENCE and READING STAMINA by teaching them to decode using COGNATES. Since this is a project done early in the year, even novice students can be successful. Some kids will pick up and retain some of the words but you will know if you’re successful by watching their reading stamina grow.
4 Steps of the Project (takes students 2-3 days to finish if they color it all):
1. Decorate skull page 1.
2. Match the symbols with the clues on skull page 2.
3. Complete the T-Chart on skull page 3 about the products and practices of the Day of the Dead.
4. Assemble the three-page calavera for display
I use this project after teaching about the products and practices of el Día de los Muertos, and doing a scavenger hunt (also available in my store!) for the different symbols. Then I follow up with this calavera project!
